Ike Ekweremadu, former Senate President
In a significant diplomatic move, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration has initiated discussions with the United Kingdom to secure the transfer of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu to Nigeria so that he can serve out his prison term in the country rather than remain incarcerated in the UK.
Ike Ekweremadu was convicted in March 2023 in the UK for his involvement in an organ-trafficking scheme. He, his wife Beatrice, and a medical doctor were found guilty of arranging for a 21-year-old Nigerian man to be brought to the UK for a kidney transplant intended for the couple’s daughter.
The sentence handed down to Ekweremadu was nine years and eight months; his wife received four years and six months while the doctor received ten years. His wife has since been released and returned to Nigeria, but Ekweremadu remains in UK custody.
President Tinubu has dispatched a high-level delegation to London to engage with British authorities—specifically the UK Ministry of Justice—to explore legal mechanisms by which Ekweremadu might be transferred to Nigeria. The delegation includes Foreign Affairs Minister, Yusuf Tuggar, and the Attorney-General & Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi.
According to official statements, the purpose of the visit is to examine possible prisoner-transfer agreements, humanitarian release, or other legal options under international frameworks.
