United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has officially appointed Alexander De Croo of Belgium as the new Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), marking a significant leadership shift within the UN’s development arm. His appointment, confirmed by the UN General Assembly on 17 November 2025, grants him a four-year mandate to steer the agency during a pivotal time for global cooperation.
Guterres expressed his gratitude to De Croo’s predecessor, Achim Steiner of Germany, for his dedicated service, and also thanked Haoliang Xu, the Associate Administrator, who has served as Acting Administrator pending De Croo’s arrival.
A former Belgian prime minister, De Croo brings a rich portfolio of political and development experience. His leadership vision emphasizes inclusivity, global solidarity, and innovation — themes he described as central to his mission in guiding UNDP’s work across more than 170 countries.
